⛈️ Rowdy summer thundershowers, soaking overnight storms and high humidity over the last few weeks are (still 😬) keeping trails and chams damp.
⚠️ If you venture out, ride with caution. Be prepared for greasy roots, slick rocks and intermittent wet sections.🌪️ High winds moving in with today’s storm may bring limbs or trees down. Conditions will be spicy and/or sloppy - use your best judgment and turn back if necessary. If you had plans to travel here to ride this weekend, consider pivoting to a burger tour 🍔. Other things… 🪓Trail season is here. We're putting those membership donations to work. Thank you to those of you who are renewing your support! (betatrails.org/donate). We appreciate you. 🛑 Please remember that the new trail being constructed in Craig Wood is CLOSED for your safety and for the safety of the trail builders. Be patient. It’ll be worth it. 🔥 Registration for Wilmington Mountain Bike Fest is OPEN. Live music. BEER. Grilled cheese. BIKES. What are you waiting for? 💙 Thinking of our NY/VT neighbors and friends affected by the recent flooding. Take care of yourselves and each other.

It’s a jungle out there. Consistent rain and high humidity over the last couple of weeks is keeping trails and chams damp. If you venture out, ride with caution. Be prepared to embrace a little grease as roots and rocks will be sweaty and slick and you may encounter wet sections.
Some other things to note: 🪓Trail season is here. We're putting those membership dollars right to work. Please remember that the new trail being constructed in Craig Wood is CLOSED for your safety and for the safety of the trail builders. 😶🌫️ For now, the smoke from the Canadian wildfires has shifted and our air quality is back in the healthy range. 🔥 Registration for Wilmington Mountain Bike Fest is OPEN. Live music. Grilled cheese. BIKES. 🇺🇸 Happy 4th! Be safe. Ride bikes. Heyyyy, remember that May drought? It's over. We've had consistent rain all week and the weekend forecast is calling for an additional inch (or more!). If you venture out, be prepared to embrace the grease. Roots and rocks will be slick and you're likely to encounter wet sections. Pedal with caution and ride or walk through mud instead of around it.
Earlier in the season, after a hard rain, we sometimes encouraged folks to give the trails 24 hours to dry out or to avoid them all-together. Why the shift in messaging? We haven't seen freezing temperatures in a month or so, and thankfully for our gardens, we're beyond the freeze/thaw cycle. Because of this, the trails have had a chance to harden and stabilize, making them less prone to damage and better equipped to handle and shed water. And in addition to that, we're coming off of an extended period of dry weather. The rain was much needed and the trees and plants are happily drinking it up. Some other things to note: 1.) Registration for the 1000 Animals Social Athletic Club Ride CLOSES on Monday. Pre-registration is required. 2.) Early bird pricing for the Wilmington Mountain Bike Fest ends June 22nd. Don't miss it! Live music. Grilled cheese. BIKES. 3.) Trail season is here. We're putting those membership dollars right to work. Thanks to all who are renewing their support! And last thing - GOOD LUCK to all of the brave riders attempting the Over Easy this weekend in these traditionally spicy conditions. Get some! Thanks to region-wide efforts by BETA staff, trail adopters and volunteers, all networks are in great shape. It's only May - you should still expect to come across occasional wet spots and perpetually troublesome soft sections, especially after the rain predicted for this weekend. And although the trails are riding well, there is plenty of work to be done. Keep an eye on our communications for opportunities to give back starting THIS Sunday at Mount Pisgah from 9AM-3PM. Dig. Ride. Grill. Come for some, or all. Registration strongly encouraged.
🤘 The long awaited Blue Ribbon (Flow Trail) on Scott's Cobble is now open. BETA staff and volunteers put in a solid shift Thursday night fixing berms and ruts and raking and removing loose rocks. Thanks for your patience on this one - it's a bit slower to dry out. 🤘Cinderella Story is open again from the driving range trailhead on Rte. 86. Please follow the red signs and markers through the area impacted. The logging activity addressed risks to power loss and threats to irrigation for the Lake Placid Club Golf Courses. BETA was able to work with the Lussi family to identify a solution to restore access to the trails as safely and quickly as possible. Remember that all Lussi Trails are on private land and access is a privilege. 🤘In case you missed it, a generous donor has offered to match donations to Phase 2 of East Branch up to $5000! Thank you to all (31 of you so far!) who've already taken advantage of this opportunity! The matching campaign ends May 29th. Double your impact today. Every dollar helps. www.betatrails.org/keene ⚠️ Fowlers parking at Route 86 is closed due to rail trail construction. We are working with DEC to identify alternative parking and access points for Fowlers trails while the rail trail construction is underway this year. Wherever you're riding this weekend, think of the trail organizations, the volunteers, the landowners and all of the partners and people making it possible for you to walk out of work and hike, run or ride into the woods. #ridewithgratitude Guess it's safe to tuck those skis away...
🤘Thanks to a nice stretch of sunny days and swift work done by both the Lussi family and BETA staff, Cinderella Story is open again from the driving range trailhead on Rte. #ridewithgratitude ⚠️ Craig Wood is starting to shape up and the budding trees will continue to help pull the moisture up and out of the ground. Blue Ribbon (The Flow Trail) and Cobble Wood Connector are still very soft. Please avoid them. If you're itching to get into Craig Wood (we get it!) we recommend accessing the trails via Bird Song Lane. 19th hole is ready for you. Send with caution! ⚠️ Fowlers parking at Route 86 is closed due to rail trail construction. We are working with DEC to identify alternative parking and access points for Fowlers trails while the rail trail construction is underway this year. 🤘 Upper Dewey and Loggers are now both “yellow” - get some Loggers Loops in before the first mosquito hatch. Rumor has it, they’re already hungry at Dewey. We know this green, yellow, red business isn't your favorite. Trust us, it's not our favorite either - but we thank you for tuning in. Be patient. In time, it'll be green lights top to bottom. We appreciate you. Waiting on those May flowers...
Despite this week's deluge, the trails, for the most part, fared really well. Such a quick recovery after a significant rain event wouldn't be possible without ongoing and preventative maintenance efforts. Thanks to all staff and volunteers who've been out leaf-blowing, raking, clearing and addressing any drainage concerns. Overall, everything that was good to go last week, will be so again this weekend - but please pedal with caution. There will likely be wet sections, and although rideable, some trails could use one more day/night to dry out. All "greens" have effectively become "yellows" but conditions will continue to improve this weekend and into next week. Reminder that these reports are a snapshot in time and are subject to change. Thankfully, any updates in the coming days should be for the better - warm, dry weather ahead. Some other things to note: ⚠️ The Lussi Trails are open but please continue to avoid Cinderella Story until further notice. Logging operations are in progress near the Lake Placid Club driving range trailhead on Rte 86 and the trail is impassable. Power House Road connector trail to Cinderella Story should also be avoided for the time being. REMINDER that all Lussi Trails are on private land and access is a privilege. We are working closely with the Lussi family to identify a solution and we thank them for their partnership and for being strong, long-time supporters of BETA. We hope to have a detailed Cinderella Story update for you this coming week. ⚠️ Fowlers parking at Route 86 is closed due to rail trail construction. We are working with DEC to identify alternative parking and access points for Fowlers trails while the rail trail construction is underway this year. 👍 In Lake Placid, Loop 1 and Broken Dreams are now cleared and open. Please avoid Loop 2 and 3. Happy Friday! Here comes the sun. Friday already!? We’ve got good news, not-so-good news and some general updates.
Not-so-good news: Spring continues to toy with our emotions, delivering summer heat followed by temperature dips in the 20’s and 30’s. On top of that, this coming week will bring around 2 inches of rain. Consider these updates a snapshot in time. Conditions are very likely to change after the rain events on deck. Please remember that this time of year is when trails are at their most vulnerable 🙏 Good News: Pisgah is 💯% open. Get it while it’s good. Lake Placid folk, rejoice- Lussi land is cleared, tacky and ready for you too BUT ⚠️ Please avoid Cinderella Story 4/28 - 5/5. Logging operations are in progress on the trail near the Lake Placid Club driving range trailhead on Rte 86. REMINDER that all Lussi Trails are on private land and access is a privilege. #ridewithgratitude ⚠️ Fowlers parking at Route 86 is closed due to rail trail construction. We are working with DEC to identify alternative parking and access points for Fowlers trails while the rail trail construction is underway this year. Last, a big THANK YOU to all who’ve been in the woods scoping progress, blowing leaves, raking and helping us to get things ready for another awesome riding season. #thiscommunity |
