On Sunday, volunteers led by Chris, BETA's Trail Stewardship Leader, tackled finishing work on the Town Connector Trail reroute in Wilmington.
The crew made quick work of that section and then moved into the Adirondack Land Trust's Three Sisters Preserve. We cleared drainages and addressed brake bumps on berms on the majority of Flobus. We heard from passersby that the ride was already smoother thanks to that work. 📸 First & second-to-last pictures by Megan, BETA's Outreach Coordinator; all other pictures by Connie, BETA Board Member. The Town Connector Trail in Wilmington is the main path from the Wilmington Rec Park to trails on the Adirondack Land Trust's Three Sister's Preserve. The Town Connector Trail will soon be rerouted from the current trail, which interferes with future development. For over a year, we've been working with the private landowner, consulting trail builder, and the Wilmington Local Trails Committee to create a new route that preserves that valuable connection, long term, with minimum impact on the property. Across the region, BETA relies on the community spirit of private landowners for access to so many trails. We appreciate all the help with finding a solution that works for everyone. We recently began machine work on the reroute. We're hosting a volunteer trail party led by Chris, BETA's Trail Stewardship Leader, on September 6th to hand finish the reroute. Register at www.bit.ly/BETAvolunteer -- we'd love to have you there! We interupt our regularly-scheduled stories as part of our End of the Year Campaign to bring you, "Creature Feature -- Ermine at Three Sisters". We apologize for the change in posting pattern. Without further ado...
Creatures of all sorts benefit from BETA's work. While out on a trail visit to Adirondack Land Trust's Three Sisters Preserve in late November, our group spotted this gorgeous ermine, photographed by the ALT's Stewardship Manager Derek Rogers. These feisty predators are pretty sneaky; seeing them is a rare and coveted experience. This special woodland resident was a great reminder that the land preserved for recreation provides services even beyond the valuable gift of fun trails. They offer a home to wildlife, and they offer us a chance to witness that wildlife. Fleeting moments of awe in the woods are made possible by land preservation and outdoor recreation. Thank you to the Adirondack Land Trust for working with us to manage trails at Three Sisters Preserve. Thank you Derek for capturing this incredible little guy and sharing your photos with us. Thank you to this little guy for letting us peek into the wild lives of woodland critters. More to ComeBETA’s work is multi-facetted, ever-evolving, and always dedicated to maintaining and building trails and creating community. The end of the 2025 trail work season is rapidly approaching, but we're still busy planning for next year's projects.
If the 2025 trail projects have benefitted you or your community, please consider supporting our work by becoming a member or renewing your membership at a higher giving level. We are so deeply grateful to the hundreds of people who build, fund, champion, and enjoy these trails -- you're both the reason and the way that we do what we do: build trails and create community. Thank you! There is always something cooking at BETA. Right now, some of the projects on our horizon include the following.
