*THE 2022 "KEY SWAP" WILL HAVE A MODIFIED FORMAT DUE TO THE COVID PANDEMIC. WE HOPE THINGS CAN GET BACK TO NORMAL IN 2023.*

Avalanche Pass & Lake Colden Ski Tour, High Peaks Wilderness Area Our annual "key swap" outing is a tradition for many Adirondack backcountry skiers. In normal times the outing is done as a point-to-point traverse of the High Peaks Wilderness Area from the Adirondack Loj in the north to the Upper Works in the south (or vice versa), with skiers "swapping" car keys when they meet in the middle. Skiers usually regroup for apres at the Cascade Ski Center. This year, with COVID persisting, we're going to modify the format and make this an out-and-back tour from Adirondack Loj to Lake Colden (and maybe Flowed Lands if time permits). This tour rewards skiers with beautiful alpine scenery and some of the best backcountry trail skiing in the Adirondack Park. Ski outing is FREE...But skiers must be current BETA members to participate (per our insurance policy). PROOF OF COVID VACCINATION REQUIRED. Please complete the form below for each skier participating. Group size is limited by wilderness regulations, so online registration is capped at 12 individuals. Don't delay, this will fill-up fast! READ BEFORE YOU REGISTER - This is an advanced backcountry ski tour. Skis with metal edges are recommended (skins are not required but some skiers may want them for climbing). Participants should be physically capable of skiing 12-14 miles on variable snow conditions and on steep, narrow trails). Participants should be prepared to spend 6-8 hours outdoors in cold temperatures and possibly inclement weather. Dress in layers, bring extra clothing, gloves and hats. Bring plenty of water and food. Sunglasses or goggles recommended for crossing the ice on Lake Colden and Avalanche Lake. Not recommended for children under the age of 12 (parents please use your best judgement).
